Coleigo Nationales - Vilcabamba is a high school offering day and night classes to about 200 students. This school has a progressive building program that offers the tactics necessary to house a great education but lack the sophisticated equipment and supplies to provide a challenging curriculum to the future needs of the students.

This school has recently undergone a renovation with a new 2-story classroom building. Like the Trece de April school, they have fairly good facilities in comparison with other schools in the valley. However, they need improvement in their career or vocational facilities, such as wood shop, chemistry lab, computer classes, etc.

Bare walls and primary-style student desks are the normal in most classrooms. Wall charts, maps and pictures are shared by each class and move from room to room as needed.

ACF Administrative Director Christi Forbes and ACF Missionary Elsie Miller posed during a recent trip to Vilcabamba High School. Even though it was a day-off for the students, over half of them came to school in full uniform.

Enthusiasm runs deep, but lack of available equipment makes teaching a challenge, in
a one computer for 50 student ratio tools have to be shared. Mentoring such as the ACF Teacher could be made easier if students could be more hands on.

Vilcabamba all-girls school (Trece de April) Has about 250 students per school year. This school is in downtown Vilcabamba and is the recipient of most of the communities help with school equipment and supplies. Their needs are not as great as the other schools in the valley, however a steady flow of supplies and some more expensive, specific equipment is needed.

With the Andes Mountains as a backdrop, Trec de April provides a great environment for a good educational style. the students are required to wear uniforms but there is nothing uniform about their individual needs for better educational opportunities.

The initial efforts to upgrade the educational system in Vilcabamba have not only been successful, but have already yielded great results. In early 2003, VíaVienté CEO and Founder, Craig Keeland, visited the school with Dr. Mark Pederson, to personally deliver the first donated computer to the school. A second computer along with additional materials were sent to Vilcabamba.

In October, 2003, Craig Keeland, overseen the packaging of an entire palette of materials gathered by the son of Dr. Mark Pederson who solicited the donations of these items as a part of his Eagle Scout Project. All freight costs and administrative expenses for this and all other donations have been paid by Craig Keeland personally.

The future of the children of San Pedro is now. We must continue providing help to these children so that their future is brighter. With recent donations and Mission Trips to Vilcabamba, ACF has been able to deliver 1000's of dollars worth of equipment and provide much needed school supplies and new desks and chairs.

Coleigio Nationales - San Pedro de Vilcabamba is a High School filled with about 200 students with great potential but very little resources from which to work. With the addition of this school, ACF has taken-on a challenge that will be very rewarding with a bright future.

The High School has a common use area for all activities. The concrete foundation was built by residents using boulders they hauled up from the river bed some 400 yards below the school.

The classrooms are open air with no windows or doors. The students must carry their desks and chairs from room to room to participant in various subjects. ACF Trustee, Terry Minke unpacked suppliers presented to the school on our first visit. Their complete library consists of about 25-30 books. Books for their library is a priority.

The school has received woodworking equipment for the wood shop which has not yet been constructed. They will need carpentry and woodworking skills training once the wood shop is complete.
